What a year it has been—truly one to remember!

This year has been transformational for our students, filled with opportunities, academic achievement, and personal growth. We are incredibly proud of what our school community has accomplished together, and even more excited about the future we’re building. The successes this year are a true testament to the support from so many people. It is due to the hard work and support from every member of staff, the engagement of our parents and carers, the backing of local businesses and community organisations, and at the heart of it all our inspirational students, whose energy, ambition, and spirit continue to drive everything we do. Our core values of Respect, Aspiration and Resilience have shone through in every part of school life.

Our Year 12 students have led the way with academic ambition, earning Super Curricular Awards in recognition of their commitment to learning beyond the classroom. We have welcomed a range of inspirational guests through our “An Audience With…” series, including the Mayor of the East Midlands and most recently, educationalist and Gogglebox star Baasit Siddiqui. These moments have helped our students to aim higher, think wider, and develop the confidence to shape their futures.

This year also saw NUAST feature on the BBC East Midlands Politics Show, contributing to an important discussion on music education. At the same time, we launched our brand-new Music Society, which now offers fully funded music tuition to its members broadening access to the arts and nurturing creativity.

Our students continue to embody respect for others through their commitment to charitable causes, taking part in numerous fundraising events that have supported local, national, and global causes. They’ve embraced a wide range of cultural and enrichment opportunities, from theatre visits to professional tennis tournaments, an unforgettable first for many of our Year 7 to 9 students.

We have celebrated our wonderfully diverse school community throughout the year, with the highlight being our vibrant and joyful Culture Day. Our student-led STEM Fair was another standout moment, giving students the chance to explore a planetarium at the University of Nottingham and share their passion for science and innovation.

Our commitment to harnessing the aspiration of our students was further reinforced through visits to leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and Nottingham. These experiences have inspired students to pursue their goals with confidence and clarity. A group of NUAST16 students also joined another NOVA school on a transformational trip to Brussels, gaining valuable cultural and political insights.

Year 10 students stepped out of their comfort zones to take part in mock interviews with local employers, developing their communication and career-readiness skills. We were also proud to celebrate one student's incredible personal strength as they received the Rotary Club Award for Courage, a powerful demonstration of resilience in action.

More students than ever have completed the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards this year, and we’re thrilled to be offering the Gold Award at NUAST16 from next year, a milestone that reflects our drive to encourage students to challenge themselves and grow.

We've also had the privilege of celebrating our exceptional staff through NOVA Education Trust's commitment to recognising loyalty. Additionally, NUAST has been named the Best Workplace in Nottingham by the NEU, an accolade that speaks volumes about the strength of our community.

And through it all, in every lesson and every classroom, our students continue to shine. They are achieving more than ever before and showing that with  resilience, aspiration and respect, anything is possible. We look forward to celebrating our Year 11 and 13 students' achievement in the summer and supporting them into the next stage of their careers.

Thank you for your continued support throughout this remarkable year. Together, we are building something truly special. This year was incredible and this is only the beginning!!

Kind Regards

Scarlett Storer, who has been honored with the prestigious Child Courage Award

We are incredibly proud to celebrate one of our own—Scarlett Storer, who has been honored with the prestigious Child Courage Award! Scarlett’s remarkable journey, marked by resilience, determination, and unwavering positivity, has inspired our entire school community. This award is a well-deserved recognition of the strength and courage she demonstrates every single day.

Despite facing significant challenges at a young age, Scarlett has never let adversity define her. Through family disruptions and personal hardship, she has shown a powerful resolve to stay focused, hopeful, and committed to her future. Scarlett's ability to maintain a 100% attendance record while navigating such difficult times speaks volumes about her character and her dedication to her education.

Her transition into a supportive and loving foster family has provided the stability she needed to thrive. Surrounded by care and encouragement, Scarlett has regained her confidence and happiness, and her bright smile reflects the inner strength she has carried all along. Her foster family, along with the unwavering support of her friends at school, have played a key role in helping her shine once more.

Scarlett embodies the very best of our school’s values—resilience, respect, and aspiration. She is a role model to her peers and a testament to the power of perseverance, kindness, and the human spirit. Winning the Child Courage Award is not just a celebration of her achievements, but a recognition of the bravery she shows each and every day.

Belonging at NUAST

At NUAST, we believe that belonging means looking out for one another—and today was a perfect example of that in action.

With our Year 11 students preparing for their biology exam, we made sure they were served first at the BBQ, giving them time to relax, refuel, and focus before heading into the exam hall. It was a small gesture that reflected a big part of who we are as a school: supportive, thoughtful, and community-minded.

Meanwhile, the rest of the school enjoyed a fabulous lunchtime, with delicious food, warm weather, and great company. Smiles, laughter, and full plates were seen across the campus—a true celebration of school spirit and togetherness.

We're also thrilled to report an impressive attendance rate of 95.6% on that day! That’s a testament to the commitment of our students and the strength of our community.

Celebrating the determination of Year 10, 11, 12 & 13 – and the staff who supported them!

Celebrating the efforts of our exam-year students

As this important term draws to a close, we want to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible commitment and resilience shown by our students in Years 10, 11, 12, and 13 — as well as the unwavering support of the staff who have guided them every step of the way.

Well done to our Year 11 students on completing their GCSE examinations!
The past few years, and particularly the recent exam period, have demanded a great deal of focus, discipline, and hard work. Throughout, our students have demonstrated remarkable tenacity and a positive attitude, embracing early morning warm-up sessions, independent study, and effective revision techniques such as flash cards, mind maps, and the use of past papers. Their mature and focused approach has been consistently impressive, and we are incredibly proud of what they have achieved.

As we look ahead to GCSE Results Day in August, we know this can be a time of excitement and, for some, anxiety. Parents and carers may also be feeling a mix of emotions. To help you support your child through this period, here are some useful tips from BBC Bitesize on managing Results Day.

Year 10 students have also shown great promise, following in the footsteps of Year 11 with an exceptionally mature and determined approach to their recent mock exams. Staff have been impressed with their resilience and willingness to engage in the process seriously — qualities that will stand them in good stead as they move into their final GCSE year.

Next year will undoubtedly be a challenging one, but we are confident that Year 10 will rise to the occasion. To support them in preparing effectively, the first term of Year 11 will include a focused programme of six tutor time sessions dedicated to revision skills. Research shows that effective revision techniques can improve exam outcomes by as much as 10–30%, so building these habits early will be crucial.

Revision is never easy — and it can be a source of added stress for already busy teenagers. So how can parents and carers help? We recommend this insightful article featuring advice from educational psychologists and parental influencer LV General: Help your child revise and prep for exams – Homework Hacks.

A heartfelt thank you must also go to our dedicated staff, who have gone above and beyond to support students — from early morning revision sessions and lunchtime workshops to after-school clinics and one-to-one guidance. Their commitment and care have been pivotal in helping students feel confident and prepared.

Together, students and staff have demonstrated what makes our school community so special: resilience, collaboration, and shared ambition.

Year 11 Prom – A night to remember!

The Year 11 Prom at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Nottingham was a truly fantastic evening! Students arrived in style and celebrated in spectacular fashion, enjoying a night full of laughter, dancing, and unforgettable memories. The venue was stunning, the atmosphere electric, and it was clear that everyone had an amazing time. A perfect way to mark the end of an incredible year!

Well done to everyone involved — we are proud of you all and look forward to celebrating your successes in the weeks and months ahead.

Attendance Matters: “Everyone Attends, Every Day”

At NUAST, we’re proud to consistently exceed national attendance averages — and we’re especially proud of the many students who have maintained 100% attendance throughout the year. Their commitment to learning is a credit to them and their families.

The final term of the year contained many important academic assessments, enrichment opportunities, and preparation for next year, and therefore strong attendance was more important than ever. Every day counts — and every missed day is a missed opportunity.

To support families, we are continuing to:

  • Contact parents where attendance is a concern.
  • Offer targeted support to overcome barriers to attendance.
  • Work closely with our Heads of Year and the local authority for students falling below expectations or identified as persistent absentees.
  • Conduct home visits where needed, led by Miss Akhtar, to help re-engage students and offer tailored support.

We also remind families of our clear policy on term-time holidays: missed learning can lead to gaps in knowledge, increased anxiety, and lower outcomes in exams. Regular attendance is vital to long-term success.

To celebrate commitment, our “Everyone Attends, Every Day” initiative continued with:

  • Feed a Family Friday – Weekly £30 Just Eat voucher prizes for students with 100% attendance
  • Additional rewards for sustained or improved attendance
  • Additional vouchers and an iPad draw in the final celebration assembly!

Let’s start the Autumn term strong — by showing up, every day, and making every moment count.

If you have any questions about your child’s attendance or have received a letter regarding their attendance record, please contact your child’s Head of Year.

Thank you for your continued support in making NUAST a place where attendance drives success!

Student Council at NUAST: An opportunity to shape the future

At NUAST, student voice matters. Our Student Council plays a vital role in shaping the future of our school community by giving students the platform to share ideas, raise concerns, and help drive positive change.

This year, the Student Council has been instrumental in bringing forward a range of important issues. We’ve heard valuable insights and suggestions around how we use our study zones, how our rewards system works, and the impact of our behaviour system. Students have also contributed thoughtful reflections on teaching and learning, helping to guide us in making lessons even more effective and engaging.

These discussions have helped us to understand what’s working well—and where we can do better. We’re proud of the mature and constructive dialogue we’ve had with our students, and the passion they’ve shown in helping to make NUAST the best it can be.

Looking ahead to next year, we’re excited to continue these conversations. The Student Council will be exploring a wider range of themes, and every student will have the chance to contribute their voice. We’re committed to transparency and impact, which is why we will publish a summary of the changes and actions we take as a result of what we hear.

NUAST belongs to its students as much as its staff. Through the Student Council, our learners are not just preparing for the future—they’re helping to shape it.

This year, the Sixth Form Leadership Council has also played a key role in student life, organising a wide variety of events and representing student interests across the school community. Their contributions include:

  • Organising the Staff vs Students quiz
  • Distributing Valentine’s roses
  • Hosting charity events such as bake sales and non-uniform days
  • Supporting the Alumni event
  • Leading festive activities including henna art and cake decorating at Christmas
  • Creating personalised Easter cookies
  • Producing the Leavers’ video
  • Representing students at senior leadership meetings and Open Events
  • Supporting Culture Day and representing NUAST16 at other schools as part of the new leadership team

Their commitment and creativity have made a real impact on school culture, and we look forward to seeing how the next leadership team builds on this strong foundation.

Get involved. Speak up. Make a difference.

Words that taste like experience: Year 9’s creative writing & food fusion workshop

On 6th May, our Year 9 students were invited to experience language like never before — through their taste buds! As part of an exciting cross-curricular initiative, the English Department hosted a creative writing and food tasting workshop, blending sensory exploration with imaginative storytelling.

The session began with a flavour-packed tasting chart, where students sampled a range of ingredients and recorded their sensory impressions — from bold aromas to delicate textures. These observations became the building blocks for richly descriptive writing, as students translated taste into narrative and feeling into metaphor.

Whether it was the zest of citrus, the comfort of cinnamon, or the luxury of dark chocolate, each flavour sparked a fresh burst of creativity. The results were powerful: original stories and vivid descriptions filled with sensory detail, showing just how inspiring real-world experiences can be for young writers.

A huge thank you to our English Department for curating such a dynamic and immersive learning experience. By connecting creative writing with tangible, real-life sensations, they’ve helped our students develop not just their literacy, but their confidence, curiosity, and imagination.

The enthusiasm from Year 9 was unmistakable — a true testament to the power of experiential learning.

We look forward to seeing how these young authors continue to channel the senses in their future writing!

NUAST Students spotlight the power of music in education

It was fantastic to see students from NUAST (Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology) recently featured discussing the vital role music plays in young people's lives—even within a school primarily focused on science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).

In a world where academic priorities are often narrowly defined, NUAST students made a compelling case for why music education should not be left behind. Their voices added to a growing conversation about how music supports a well-rounded education, nurturing creativity, discipline, emotional intelligence, and teamwork—skills that are just as crucial in engineering labs as they are in music studios.

At a time when music provision in schools across the UK has seen significant decline, it’s heartening to see schools within the Nova Education Trust bucking the trend. From expanding music departments to giving students access to instruments, performance opportunities, and cross-disciplinary projects, the trust is committed to making music a central part of school life again.

The segment, which aired recently and is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer (watch here), captures the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of NUAST’s students as they reflect on the value of music—even in a setting where science and tech often dominate the timetable.

Their message is clear: music isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. It contributes not only to personal growth but also to academic achievement, mental well-being, and community spirit. At Nova Education Trust, the arts and sciences are not in competition—they complement each other, and together they help shape the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.

NUAST Celebration Awards - A special thank you to Baasit Siddiqui for inspiring our students

On Monday 21st July 2025, NUAST proudly hosted its Celebration Awards Event 2025, marking the end of another outstanding academic year by recognising the incredible achievements of our students.

Awards were presented across all subject areas, honouring students not only for their academic excellence but also for living the NUAST core values of Respect, Resilience, and Aspiration. These values are central to everything we do at Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology, and it was a joy to see so many students exemplify them this year.

We were delighted to be joined by Baasit Siddiqui, television personality and educationalist, who presented the awards and delivered an inspirational keynote address. Baasit’s message of perseverance, ambition, and self-belief truly resonated with our students, leaving them motivated and encouraged for the future.

A special congratulations goes to all of our award recipients. Their dedication, hard work, and character represent the very best of NUAST, and we are incredibly proud of your achievements.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Baasit Siddiqui for taking the time to attend the event and helping to make this year’s celebration so memorable.

As we look ahead to the next academic year, we do so with confidence and pride, knowing that our students will continue to thrive.

Year 10 Mock Interviews – A Fantastic Success!

Year 10 students at NUAST recently took part in a brilliant opportunity to experience the world of work first-hand through a series of mock interviews with external professionals. Each student had the chance to sit down with an industry expert, practising their interview skills and gaining invaluable feedback on their performance.

The event was not only a great learning experience for our students, but also a resounding success in the eyes of our visiting professionals. Many of the employers were extremely impressed with how confidently and maturely our students approached the task, showcasing strong communication skills, ambition, and a real willingness to learn.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all our partners who gave up their time to support the event. Your insights, encouragement and constructive feedback made a real impact on our students and their future career development.

Well done, Year 10 – you did NUAST proud!

Years 7–9 enjoy world-class tennis experience on their doorstep

Students in Years 7 to 9 were recently treated to an unforgettable experience as they attended a professional tennis event right here in our local area.

The trip gave students the chance to witness top-level athletes in action, soaking up the energy and excitement of live matches while gaining insight into the discipline and skill required at the highest level of the sport. For many, it was their first time seeing professional tennis up close — and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

The atmosphere was electric, with students fully engaged in the matches and even picking up a few tips and techniques to take back to their own games. The event not only entertained but also inspired, sparking fresh enthusiasm for sport across the year groups.

A huge thank you to all the staff who organised the trip and supported the students throughout the day. It was a fantastic experience that will be remembered for a long time to come.

NUAST Sports Day 2025: A triumph of talent, teamwork and true NUAST values!

What a day! The sun shone, the crowd roared, and the spirit of NUAST came alive as students, staff, and families gathered for Sports Day 2025 — a celebration of athleticism, community, and the values that define us.

From the moment the first race began, the energy across the field was electric. Students gave their all — sprinting, leaping, throwing and cheering with unwavering determination. Every event, whether a 100m dash or a long-distance challenge, showcased more than just physical ability. It revealed the strength of character that sits at the heart of the NUAST ethos.

Resilience on display

Throughout the day, students showed incredible resilience — pushing past limits, bouncing back from setbacks, and refusing to give up. Whether it was a relay team making a comeback or an athlete overcoming nerves to step up to the starting line, the courage and perseverance on display were truly inspiring.

Respect in every step

Sportsmanship was everywhere. From handshakes at the finish line to cheers for competitors from other houses, the day was filled with respect — for teammates, for opponents, and for the event itself. The way students supported one another, regardless of the result, reflected the strong sense of community that makes NUAST so special.

Aspiration in action

Most of all, Sports Day was a celebration of aspiration. Students set goals, chased personal bests, and dared to achieve more than they thought possible. It wasn’t just about winning — it was about striving, improving, and growing in confidence.

A community effort

Behind the scenes, staff worked tirelessly to ensure the day ran smoothly, and the enthusiasm from parents and carers cheering on the sidelines brought extra energy and encouragement. It was a true team effort that made the day not just successful, but unforgettable.

To every student who competed, every person who supported, and every member of staff who helped bring the event to life — thank you. You embodied everything NUAST stands for.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

A huge congratulations to all the students who successfully completed their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) expeditions this term! Their determination, teamwork, and resilience were on full display as they navigated challenging routes, unpredictable weather, and long days of hiking — all while carrying their kit and supporting each other along the way.

The Bronze expedition saw our students take to the countryside for two days of walking and one night of camping. For many, it was their first experience of outdoor navigation, cooking meals, and pitching tents — and they handled it all with impressive enthusiasm and maturity.

Our Silver participants tackled a longer, more demanding journey over three days and two nights. They not only demonstrated strong navigational skills but also great perseverance and leadership, especially as they encountered more difficult terrain and tougher weather conditions.

The DofE Award is about more than just the expedition — it challenges young people to grow in confidence, develop practical skills, and build character. Watching students encourage one another, solve problems as a team, and reflect on their progress has been a true highlight for all involved.

We’re incredibly proud of every participant and grateful to the staff who supported them — from training walks and route planning to supervision and encouragement throughout.

Celebrating diversity: Culture Day at NUAST

On 24th July 2025, NUAST came alive with color, creativity, and community spirit as students and staff came together to celebrate Culture Day — a vibrant showcase of the rich cultural diversity within our school.

From the moment the event began, the atmosphere was electric. Our talented students took center stage with an incredible variety of performances that included dance and and music from around the world. A highlight for many was the infectious rhythm of the steel drum band, as well as various performances on the outdoor stage!

Throughout the day, students engaged in a wide range of interactive workshops exploring global arts and crafts. The workshops offered a hands-on appreciation of artistic traditions from across the globe.

Food was another star of the day, with cultural food offering delicious dishes from different continents. From fragrant curries and spicy street snacks to sweet treats and savory delicacies, the culinary journey was both educational and mouthwatering.

Culture Day was not only a celebration of heritage and identity but also an opportunity to promote understanding, respect, and curiosity. It brought students together in a shared experience of learning and appreciation for each other’s backgrounds.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who participated, performed, volunteered, and supported the event. Culture Day was a true reflection of what makes NUAST special — our inclusive, dynamic, and diverse community.

It’s been a packed and inspiring term for NUAST16, with both Year 12 and Year 13 students showing what it truly means to be part of our Sixth Form community.

Our Year 13 students have shown incredible dedication and resilience as they completed their final exams. Their commitment to their studies has been outstanding, and we were thrilled to celebrate the end of their NUAST16 journey with a fantastic prom at Bestwood Lodge—a well-deserved evening of celebration and reflection.

This term also marked the end of the tenure for our brilliant Sixth Form Student Leadership Team. Their contributions have left a lasting impact, and we thank them for their energy and service. The process to select our new leadership team was fiercely competitive, highlighting the depth of talent in our Sixth Form. We’re proud to say that our new team is already making their mark—representing Post-16 at transition events for incoming Year 12 students and taking a lead role in organising our end-of-year Culture Day, which was a vibrant and memorable celebration of our school’s diversity.

Meanwhile, our Year 12 students have truly stepped up this term. Embracing their role as the oldest students in the school, they have been fantastic role models for younger year groups. They approached their mock exams with real grit and determination, and we’re proud of the effort they’ve put into preparing for their future.

Our morning ‘Stepping Up’ sessions have focused on supporting students with their post-18 pathways—from researching university and apprenticeship options to attending workshops designed to equip them with the tools they need to succeed. A highlight of the term was a visit to Cambridge, where students explored the university and attended lectures of their choice—an inspiring experience for all involved.

We’ve also had some fantastic enrichment opportunities this term. Our Physics students had the chance to complete practicals in the state-of-the-art labs at the University of Nottingham, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a university setting. Meanwhile, students from History, Psychology, and EPQ took part in an Academic Writers Workshop, delivered by professional authors and a former Cambridge lecturer—an incredible opportunity to sharpen their academic writing and critical thinking skills.

The final week of term has been packed with enriching activities. Our Alumni Morning was a huge success, giving Year 12 students the chance to hear from former NUAST students and professionals about revision strategies, applications, and interview tips. We also enjoyed a year group bowling trip and picnic, which was a lovely way to unwind and celebrate the term together.

And of course, Culture Day was a standout moment—full of colour, creativity, and community spirit. It was heartening to see Year 12 students take a leading role in making the day such a success.

As we wrap up the year, we’re incredibly proud of everything our Sixth Form students have achieved—and excited for what lies ahead.

Proud to wear it: A positive step forward in uniform standards

This term, we’ve seen a significant improvement in uniform standards across all year groups — and we want to thank our families for their ongoing support in helping us maintain high expectations.

As a result of this positive shift, the need for staff to spend time addressing uniform issues has been greatly reduced. This has allowed for more positive, meaningful conversations between staff and students, further reinforcing the respectful and aspirational culture we value so highly at NUAST.

We continue to believe that how our students present themselves each day reflects pride in their school and a shared commitment to excellence. Wearing the NUAST uniform with pride is an important part of that journey.

A particular thank you goes to parents and carers of Key Stage 3 and 4 students, who have ensured that ties, blazers, and smart shoes are worn correctly before students enter the school gate. This simple routine has contributed to students arriving in school more settled and ready to learn.

 A quick reminder:

Our uniform policy states that footwear must be:
“Smart, polished flat shoes with a sturdy sole that can have up to a one inch heel.”
This means that:

  • Shoes must be polishable
  • Boots or fabric trainers are not permitted

All staff at NUAST are fully aligned with the uniform policy to ensure consistency and fairness across the academy.

For full details of our uniform expectations, including Sixth Form dress code, please visit our website: https://www.nuast.org.uk/page.php?p=uniform

Thank you once again for your support in helping every student look smart, feel proud, and start each day the NUAST way.

Equipment:

In order to get your child off to the best possible start, please ensure they have the following equipment for their first day back in September:

Breakfast Club – A positive start to every school day

We’re pleased to share that our Breakfast Club provision continues to be completely free of charge, offering all students a calm, supportive, and engaging start to their day.

Alongside a nutritious and varied breakfast menu — with something to suit every taste — students can now enjoy an even wider selection of morning activities, helping them to feel settled, energised, and ready to learn. Whether it’s socialising with friends, taking part in a quiet game, or simply having time to ease into the day, the club provides a positive routine that benefits both wellbeing and learning.

We encourage families to make the most of this fantastic opportunity. It’s a great way for children to begin their school day on the right foot — well-fed, happy, and ready to thrive.
